Author:Dr. Paul Uhlir
Abstract:At the June 2002 CENDI meeting, Dr. Uhlir provided a brief background and update on the EU Database Directive. The Directive was enacted in 1996 by the Commission of European Communities and was finally implemented in all member countries in 2000. The Directive is to be reviewed every three yearsr for anti-competitive effects. Some scientific organizations have expressed concerns about the Directive and its impact on science. The Institut National de la Sante et de la Recherche Medicale is concerned with public access to information and suggested that government- funded research be exempt from database protection. Publicly funded research data is being studied by OECD. His update to the group was closed with the announcement of the World Summit for an Information Society meeting to be held in 2003. The meeting is a collaborative effort by UNESCO, ICSTI and ICSU.
