Abstract:This book written by three experts who are involved in the development and implementation of information standards, presents an indepth discussion of metadata, detailing types, functions, attributes, and characteristics with examples. The book is divided into three sections, the first of which sets the stage by defining metadata and its many faces, and concluding by posing several key questions that must be resolved by information professionals as they develop digital systems. The second section discusses metadata and standards in the context of the World Wide Web, and outlines issues, opportunities, and challenges. The third section covers the mapping of different metadata standards to facilitate interoperability.
