Abstract:This is a report of a workshop hosted by the Department of Energy and held at the National Academy of Sciences on May 30-31, 2000. The workshop was chaired by Dr. Alvin Trivelpiece with other participants being experts from the major disciplines in the physical sciences as well as science policy, information science, and scientific publishing. The main objective of the workshop was to obtain the scientific community's input regarding the merits of the concept of a "Future Information Infrastructure for the Physical Sciences" that would offer a comprehensive collection of scientific and technical information in the physical sciences. This information infrastructure would also offer services that would facilitate scientific communication and increase the productivity of the scientific enterprise in the United States. The Workshop consisted of general sessions and discussions on this topic; recommendations are included.
